Our animal care placements include both veterinary offices and animal shelters. Vet placments provide an up close and personal look at all aspects of the practice from animal surgery and recovery to intake and customer service. Veterinarians are a "different breed" and this is a chance to find out if working with animals may be your calling. You will work between a number of areas at the facility: reception, waiting room, laboratory, treatment room, kennels and grooming area. The full breadth of the job duties will depend in part on the intern's experience. There may be the opportunity to assist with surgical operations to include anesthetics, surgical scrubbing, shaving, inserting catheters, and other technical procedures. Or, focus more on rehabilitation and integrating animals back to their families if that is preferred.
Animal shelter work focuses primarily on helping the animals interact with visitors. In this regard you will form bonds with particular pets and get to know their uniqie needs and dispositions. Helping them find balance at the shelter will likewise help them find a new home sooner rather than later. Shelter work also entails customer service and administrative tasks such as intake, event planning and general record keeping.
